Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know therapy is right for me?

People come to therapy because they want something in their lives to change. Whether you're feeling overwhelmed, navigating a difficult relationship, processing past experiences, or simply looking to understand yourself more deeply, therapy can provide a supportive space to explore what comes next.

Beginning therapy doesn't mean you're making a long-term commitment. You are always free to ask questions, discuss your goals, or decide whether therapy feels like the right fit for you.

What can I expect during my first session?

Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin building a foundation for our work together. We'll review your completed paperwork to ensure you understand important policies, including cancellation, privacy rights, the few legal limits to confidentiality, and other practice guidelines. You'll also have plenty of time to ask any questions before we begin.

Because sessions are conducted through secure video, you'll be asked to show a valid photo ID and confirm your current location at the start of the appointment. You'll also need to be in a private, distraction-free space where you can speak comfortably and confidentially. For your safety, sessions cannot be conducted while driving or from public places such as coffee shops.

Most therapy sessions last approximately 50 minutes. On occasion, a session may end a little earlier or continue longer if clinically appropriate. Additional fees may apply for extended sessions.

Does TeleTherapy really work?

Yes. Research shows that video therapy or TeleTherapy can be just as effective as in-person sessions. One of the strongest predictors of success in therapy is the quality of the therapist-client relationship, and that can be built easily online.

In fact, video therapy offers unique benefits including access for clients in rural area, those without reliable transportation, or those balancing work and family demands. It's therapy that fits into your real life.

That said, video therapy isn't right for everyone. If we discover together that it isn't the best fit, I'll help you explore alternatives.

What do I need for a video session?

Video therapy is conducted through a secure, encrypted telehealth platform. You'll need a device with a camera and microphone, a reliable internet connection, and a private space where you can speak comfortably and confidentially. For your first session, you'll also need to provide a photo ID for identity and location verification.

For your privacy and safety, teletherapy sessions cannot take place while driving or in public spaces where confidentiality cannot be maintained.

For more information about preparing for video therapy, including technology requirements and what to expect, visit the Teletherapy page.

Do you accept insurance for payments?

Yes, we accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and Cigna insurance plans for payment. If we are not in-network, we can provide you a "Superbill" which is a document that proves you've paid for a therapy session. Once you receive this from your therapist, you can submit it to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Always check with your insurance provider to see if video therapy is covered. Whether your insurance can cover therapy or not, clients are ultimately responsible for the full payment of therapy services provided.

*You also have the option to pay out-of-pocket, and reduced-fee options are available for those who qualify. Navigate to the Services page for more information.

Can I pay out-of-pocket/self-pay rather than use insurance?

Yes. You're welcome to pay out of pocket for therapy, whether you choose not to use insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover the services you're seeking.

Some clients prefer self-pay because it offers greater flexibility, while others choose it because their preferred therapist is out of network, their insurance limits the number of covered sessions, or they simply prefer not to use their insurance benefits.

If the full session fee is outside of your budget, reduced-fee services may be available based on household size and income. Navigate to the Services page for more information on payment options.

Do I have to be married to see a MFT?

Not at all. Despite the name, Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) work with individuals, couples, and families. You don't need to be married, or even in a relationship, to benefit from this approach.

MFTs are psychotherapists trained to understand how relationships, life experiences, culture, and larger systems influence emotional well-being. Rather than viewing challenges in isolation, MFTs consider the broader context of your life and the patterns that may be shaping your experiences. Whether you're navigating anxiety, relationship concerns, identity, life transitions, or personal growth, therapy is tailored to your unique goals.

Can I meet with my therapist while I travel outside of Alabama?

Unfortunately, due to licensing laws, clients will need to be located in the state of Alabama during the time of their scheduled therapy session.

What if I don't know what to talk about?

That's completely okay. You don't need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Many people begin therapy knowing they want something to feel different but have a hard time putting it into words.

Your therapist will help guide the conversation with thoughtful questions and curiosity, creating space to explore what feels important to you. Over time, your goals often become clearer, and it becomes easier to understand the patterns, relationships, or experiences you'd like to change.

If, along the way, you decide therapy isn't the right fit or that you've accomplished what you hoped to, we'll talk about that together. Therapy is a collaborative process, and your goals will always guide the work we do.

How often are appointments scheduled?

Most people schedule appointments once a week. Once people make progress reaching their goals, they usually spread sessions to once every other week and eventually to once a month. Sometimes people prefer to schedule every other week from the beginning.

Depending on your clinical needs, your therapist might adjust the frequency of sessions.

I'm ready for change now. How do I get started?

The first step is to schedule a free 15-minute live video consultation to see if we are a good fit.
